Sketch of the first appointed governor of Alaska, 1884, after definition of that territory as a civil and judicial district. To Salt Lake City, 1849; to California, 1854; travels on the Pacific Coast; role in the political history of Nevada, of which he was elected governor, 1878.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H. Kinkead, John H. (John Henry), 1826-1904

A native of Somerset County Pennsylvania, John Kinkead was born on December 10, 1826. He came to Carson City on 1859 to establish a branch of his father-in-law's mercantile firm. He served as territorial treasurer in Nevada before becoming Nevada's third governor. In 1884 He was appointed governor of Alaska Territory.
